Is there a reason you want to go through Detroit? When I lived in SE MI the port of entry near Port Huron, MI / Sarnia, ON was less congested with fewer wait times over the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit Tunnel. When I was in school, ON had a lower legal drinking age compared to MI & I knew my younger coworkers & classmates (who were US Citizens) crossing the border on special occasions so that they could drink.
There are no passenger trains any longer across the border at either Detroit or Port Huron requiring finding another means to cross the border. Amtrak has the Blue Water train to Port Huron & Via Rail has 84 that goes from Sarnia to Toronto.
I am a foreign national & I found Port Huron & Sarnia to be less congested & easier to pass through by car.
These are just my opinion,
Thanks,
