inventory software

I would like to know this also.

I am at the point where I have a lot of nice trains and should consider insuring them. A program like this would make it easy to provide the insurance company a listing of what I own.  

Not sure I want to know how much $ is in my collection....

There have been a fair amount of threads here of late about inventory software. If you do a search here you'll find tons to read.

I myself have tried a few but I never liked any of them enough to keep them. I'm always looking for one that meets my needs but just can't find it. Hopefully someone will post here one that really does the job.

I have just started using Yard Office. You can download it for free and try it out. I am still in the process of transferring from my old inventory system (handwritten on loose leaf paper in three ring binders). It has taken me a little time to get the hang of all the features but so far I really like it.

I just use Excel to keep track of my collection, selling, etc... Quick,, easy and available on most computers! 

I have been trying demos for the past year. I have found that the software designed for trains by train oriented people is very cumbersome to use. Many have too many fields. The biggest problem for me has been the report generation. Some require you to be a programmer. Others can't filter the reports easily. Finally, the formats that they print or create files to are hard to read or clunky. I don't find market value capability necessary, because in the end, we all know the market value is what you receive when you sell it. I only need cost and item details. Insured value? Perhaps. I get the best replacement cost doing my own research.

I have recently searched "collectors inventory software" and found some promising looking candidates that I have yet to demo. Most are Windows based, but I recently found a version written in Adobe Flash that will run on any OS with Flash installed and can be installed on a usb drive for portability. That interests me because it is not a poorly written piece that gets it's fingers into your OS. NMCollectorSoftware

In general, the collectors software is designed for most anything that you own. So, until I find the one I like, it is demo city and an Excel spreadsheet so that I don't fall too far behind in creating a database.

Edit: BTW, Open Office is free, Windows and Apple compatible with a nice spreadshet app.

I thought I'd better offer a quick clarification ... it is written using Java not Adobe.

You can build templates specific to your interests - here are step by step instructions using home inventory as an example.

Bar code or RFID chip everything.  For locos you could scan each one in and out of service and keep track of operating time.   

Interesting.  I do provide a bar code feature including bar code label reports.  Bar codes can be scanned to take you directly to the item associated with the bar code in the inventory.  I have events and maintenance tabs that could be used for logging service time.

I have had "TRAIN TRACKER" for years (maybe 15 to be exact). I have transferred the Compiled Information to 3 different Computers. It continues to work Flawlesly.

Unfortunately it is NOT available any more.

O WELL WHAT YOU GONNA DO??

I use Excel it does everything I need.  Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but it seems like all the bells and whistles are more of a nuisance than an advantage.
