At the 2007 National Narrow Gauge Convention in Portland, Maine, I purchased a three-piece body shell kit for an On18 Brookville critter, made by Railway Recollections in Canada. Upon returning home I bought the Bachmann N gauge 0-6-0 diesel (gas?) switcher to get the required power mechanism. I've done nothing with the project since.

I don't think Railway Recollections' website (railway-recollections.com) has changed in the last eight years, and I am wondering if the four small On18 freight cars pictured are still being produced? Is Railway Recollections still producing anything On18? Is anyone modeling 1/48 scale narrow gauge dabbling in 18-inch gauge, either using commercial or scratchbuilt equipment? I may do nothing more than model a small point-to-point operation from within one industrial building to another, but will definitely handlay code .55 or .40 rail on appropriately-sized ties and avoid N gauge track with ties too short and too close together.

Even if not working in On18, I would like to hear from anyone modeling O scale narrow gauge in any track width narrower than On30.

Hi Gil - I'm not (yet) actively modeling in On18, but just received a package from Backwoods Miniatures with their diesel kit and three wagons.

A note - they have two O-9 (British designation - hyphen optional) engine kits, but one of them requires you to buy the Kato power chassis from them. I already had several on hand, and also their price is 2-3 times what you can get it for out of Japan - see Hobby Search and request SAL shipping: registered if you're nervous, but most people have no problems with the plain SAL. Plaza Japan on eBay is another option, but they're (usually - maybe not for this) a bit higher.

There's a few other On18 producers out there if you search for them. There's also a Yahoo group, but not a lot of activity.

Check out this video if you want to see a gorgeous O-9 exhibition layout, with a very innovative build / display style.

I use the gauge for a mine tram, purchased a critter body and some mine skips from one of the designers at Shapeways and a motor block from Kato.  I have a little back-and-forth circuit a friend gave me to control it.  This is all on a module for our club's HO/On30 modular layout.  I don't have all the kinks worked out yet.

I'm curious to know if anyone here actively models in On18. It would offer the convenience and novelty of O-scale narrow gauge using readily available N-scale track and loco mechanisms. It would make a great side-show for an O-scale layout, or as a stand-alone layout. Perhaps it has more following in European countries.
