From the various reports on the OGR Forums, its seems like the Lionel Vision UP Big Boy is having very strong sales/pre-orders. Probably because it offers beautiful detail and innovative features. But I wonder how many of the preorders are the result of speculation or the IPO-like frenzy of the BTO marketing plan.
Lionel’s Built To Order format for the new Big Boy and Polar Express Scale 10th Anniversary Gold Berk and cars is most likely a reaction to the challenges of manufacturing high-end model trains in China, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of similarities to an Initial Public Offering on the New York Stock Exchange.
I personally do not buy trains as an investment. If I did though, I would think the Big Boy would be a good bet to buy at preorder prices and sell as soon at they are released. That’s how people make money on IPOs.
If the BTO becomes the new IPO, we can expect continued and regular innovation accompanied by ever increasing prices. Is that good for the Hobbyest? The Collector? The Speculator? All of the above? or None of the above?
