I see from time to time the Polar Express (P.E.) 0-8-0 switcher for sale. My question is since this loco was part of a low price freight set, can it be upgraded with err/railsounds, add the fan smoke unit and the GRJ supa chuffa in that small switcher?

Might be doable with a Cruise lite. Pretty tough with a Cruise Commander. Pretty much the ERR stuff would have to go in the tender. A less expensive solution would be to use a TMCC scale USRA 0-8-0 and decal the tender shell. That engines has 4 chuffs and only needs a Cruise M.

I've upgraded the PE set Berkshire with a Cruise Lite, RS Commander, and of course fan driven smoke, Super-Chuffer, Chuff-Generator, etc. There was plenty of room in the boiler as the CC-Lite and RS Commander are in the tender, so I suspect this could be done as well.
My "cobbled up" Cruise Lite + might fit with the other stuff in the tender. The big difference is it's about 1/2" longer than the original Cruise Lite.

Well I see that 3 Rd rail is taking reservation for mini commander. ( Mini Commander ex, acc, hc, and II versions) Is that the same as a Cruise Commander lite?
Note the 0-8-0 is a bit smaller than the tradional P.E. Berk.
Thanks for everyone's input. Norton maybe onto something.
This is a starter set 0-8-0. Does the PE have fan smoke? If so thats one less item you have to add.
But you are still trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. The scale 0-8-0 is much more substantial. Upgrade parts will end up costing more than the scale engine typically sells for that already have most of what you want.

Pete, you left out the part where you have to paint it for the Polar Express. However, I have to concur with your analysis, that's probably a better bet.

The Mini Commander II is the version that would replace traditional TMCC electronics for powered units. However, it does NOT have cruise, and is only for small motorized stuff. It also doesn't have the larger triac to support full sized smoke units.

I think I mentioned it above but removing lettering is a snap with these. Two minutes with a Q tip and lacquer thinner, then a set of transfers. Or, in this case, just order a shell for the Polar Express tender. Given these are from starter set 0-8-0s Lionel likely has a container full returned for burnt out motors, etc. The plastic PE shells should fit on the die cast tender frame.

Still needs a Super-Chuffer.
Here is the Polar Express 0-8-0. It not only needs a super chuffer, chuff generator, it also need a fan smoke unit and bigger motor. That is after you spend well over 200 bucks for a Cruise Commander and Railsounds. Don't forget this has a plastic frame, thin light shell, and single traction tire. Who does the upgrade? Labor cost will bring the cost higher than a Legacy H10.

UGH! I didn't realize the 0-8-0 had the small motor, now I know it's a bad idea! The PE Berkshire I upgraded had the large motor, and it'll pull it's 11 passenger cars without breaking a sweat. I actually had Frank Timko put a larger motor in the Hogwart's Express locomotive so I could pull a decent consist with it.
