My New Haven Legacy Atlantic was doing fine yesterday until it wasn’t. I don’t routinely run the smoke unit…..

All of a sudden it stopped and the headlight started blinking. The blinking headlight responded to turning off power and has not returned.

I could not reprogram it at the show, so I packed it away and brought it home.

It will not respond to Program. It will not respond to Legacy commands nor will it respond to the reset procedure. The smoke works and it will respond to transformer commands conventionally (with an active Legacy signal on the track-I can address my Niagara), but the whistle won’t blow via the ZWL whistle button.

However, everything is fine and functional under Blue Tooth control with the app…….it smokes great and even the whistle and whistle steam are fine…..

Am I looking at a Legacy board failure?

Peter

Pete, it sounds like the radio board ain’t working,….could be a shorted antenna connection, , or perhaps you lost a pin connection from the radio board to the main board,……..either way, if you want to get back to legacy control, its time to start poking around….look at the insulated hand rails, and make sure something isn’t bent, and or touching something it shouldn’t be,…..a DVM can be your friend here,….

Pat

I don't remember what my exact symptoms were (other than the locomotive working via transformer control but not CAB2) but I do know I have had to do some soldering for the antenna twice on my Legacy Atlantic. I think I did a crappy job the first time because it has otherwise been fine after I did it the second time. I suspect/hope that is your issue because that's not a huge deal.

Peter,

Any updates? I have a very similar problem with my Legacy J.

Hopefully, calling Lionel today..........I keep getting sidetracked.

Yesterday, Santa needed me to help at his Workshop........and, I went into "Elf Mode" to help....you can't say "no" to Santa......

Nice…..great detail. Reasonable pull. Whistle steam…….

That's good. Years ago I ran my #1163 around the Christmas tree for a while. It just is one of those nice small steam engines that has that sort of short engine personality. Whenever I get my layout designed, and built, I plan on having one of the runnings be #1163, #460, and my Broadway Limited(after Pat fixes the gearbox). I will have to have NYC race the Broadway Limited though, lol.

The Atlantic had a bad board and was replaced……engine returned yesterday, safe and whole.

Thank you, Lionel!

Have a great and safe weekend, folks!

Peter

I am delighted to hear the problem is fixed and that Lionel customer service got the engine working again quickly. I guess Santa’s workshop has some kind of union agreement with Lionel and that’s why Santa did not take the repair job on straightway. The evidence seems to show the Legacy board needed to be replaced, but some root cause analysis might be in order here. This is an Atlantic from Peter's Putnam Division’s stables. Given the circumstances of this particular railroad, perhaps the Atlantic was not getting enough track time pulling giraffe cars and decided to go out on strike, taking the Legacy board with it.
