I have tried everything to to generate a horn effect but no luck. The instruction manual does not have any reference on how to generate the horn effect - unlike the one I can do on 4449. I do realize that 4436 was built in 2008 and 4449 in 2016 incorporating several special features that 4436 does not offer - such as smoking whistle. So I wonder if 4436 cannot generate a "horn" like 4449.

Also, I have yet to figure out how to turn off the tender marker lights with the remote. Other than pulling the plug from inside the tender, is there a way to shut off the tender marker lights? I can turn off the tender marker lights on 4449 with my Legacy remote, but can not do the same function on 4436. I'm not a fan of lighted marker lights on tenders - very un-prototypical. Unless an engine is running light, marker lights should not be mounted on a tender, let alone turned on pull a consist.

Since both are Legacy versions, I thought that there were similar functions on both engines. But maybe being 8 years apart, Lionel had not yet incorporated the marker light "turn off" function on the older engine.

The air horn feature on the 2008 run of GS4's is controlled by pressing and holding the horn key button on your Legacy remote. This horn option will appear on the bottom right corner of the remote once you load the engine data from the orange engine memory module. Now to eliminate the marker lights on the tender of 4436, you have to take the tender shell off and unplug the marker lights from whatever board they are plugged into.

Now on the 2016 run of GS4's, to switch to the air horn, you must press aux 1 on whatever remote you are using and move whistle/horn slider or push the button to make sure you have the horn selected. Aux 1 toggles between the whistle and horn sounds. I am sure you are aware of that.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the info. I am aware of how to control the horn/whistle and tender lights on 4449.

As for 4436, I just did a test on the horn with my Legacy remote. Button 6 on the remote shows up as the "hissing or blow down effect". Hitting it and then doing the whistle, does not change the horn. Attached is a photo of my remote.

Do I need to change the setting on the remote and not set it up as a Legacy?

The reason why the horn is not showing up for 4436 is because you did not load the memory module for it. You need that so that a special soon will load on the bottom right corner of the keypad with a little horn in it. That will then give you control over the horn.

Sid,

I don't have the memory module and it is not available from Lionel.

I did change the setting on my Legacy remote from LEGACY to TMCC. When I push the number 6 button "HISS/BLOW DOWN icon, the diesel horn works. But then I loose the Legacy features. So I guess I'll just live with out using the HORN effect on this engine until I can find someone that has a memory module. I prefer the whistle instead of the horn anyway.
