That's why I'm in S - more holidays! Ain't no 1/48 or 1/87 days! And it follows pi day, sort of.

Nice picture Rusty. I just bought this S Scale boxcar off the bay. I really like it except for the fact that it appears to have plastic trucks and plastic wheels. If I ever find someone who makes metal trucks with metal wheels I would like to upgrade it. I believe the boxcar was made by AM.

Correct, it's an AM boxcar. I'm a bit surprised your car has plastic wheels, all of my AM cars be they HiRail or Scale, came with metal wheels. Must be a really early AM car or the original owner swapped out the wheels.
MTH has available the old SHS metal trucks. AM also has metal wheels available.

About that Rutland Car. When AM first came on the market, the cars had metal scale wheels and dummy scale couplers (there was no Hi Rail option). In a few years AM offered a "Hi Rail" option with dummy (non working) AF compatible couplers and plastic Hi Rail wheels. I think in the early 2000s AM offered operating AF compatible couplers and metal HI rail wheels.
I swapped out all my plastic hi rail wheels with metal wheel sets from AM (you can order them online from the AM website) . The Hi Rail or Scale wheel sets just fit right into the trucks (Be careful you don't pop the springs out of the trucks when you switch the wheel sets- I did the swaps in a plastic basin just to be safe

David,
You have to be more specific. π r2 covers a lot of "area". That's in round numbers, of course....
I partook and ran several. Even brought out the Polar Express to make it feel more festive.
Rusty and Tommy, thanks a lot for the information. I saw on the AM website that they sell trucks. I emailed them to see if they were metal trucks with metal wheel sets 4 days ago but I never got a response. Anyway, if I understand you guys correctly AM no longer sells the plastic trucks and wheels. Their trucks are very reasonably priced at $9.95. LittleTommy, I hear what you are saying but I would rather just replace the entire truck than have to worry about flying springs. I will order of few sets of them. Now, I know why I got this car for only $25. It's because of the plastic wheels. No matter I am very happy with it.

FYI: AM freight car trucks trucks have plastic sideframes--always have been, the wheels are brass. They're pretty durable and roll easily, I haven't broke one in the 30+ years I've been in S.

Thanks Rusty. The MTH trucks cost twice as much as the AM trucks. Are the MTH trucks made of metal?

Yes, the MTH trucks are the old S-Helper Service trucks.

Last time I bought AM trucks, they were plastic, a Delrin type, and the wheels are metal. But the plastic is very slippery, and that makes them are free rolling, partly due to the conical ends of the axles. You can just about BLOW on a car and have it move down the track. I've never had one wear out, so don't be afraid of plastic trucks. I agree with Rusty's assessment whole heartedly. Remember too, that they run $9.95 a PAIR.
