Here are photos of a PFE reefer block on my railroad. The photos are by Paul Dolkos. In the consist are 10 different classes of PFE reefers in a variety of early 1950's paint schemes. Represented are cars by Red Caboose (R30-9, R30-12-9), Precision Scale (R30-18, R40-4, R40-14, R70-2, R70-4). Intermountain/Atlas (R40-10), Athearn (R40-14), and Lionel (R40-23). The very nice Lionel R40-23 is true to the prototype. Lionel also produced models of plug door PFE R40-26 and R40-27 prototypes. Unlike the Lionel R40-23 model, the latter two prototypes had newer design diagonal panel roofs. I have seen pictures of the Lionel's R40-27 model (#27372)-and it has the correct roof. I would appreciate seeing a picture of Lionel PFE plug door R40-26 plug door model to determine whether it had the diagonal panel roof. I'd also like to learn the Lionel model number(s) for the purpose of posting a want-to buy listing on the OGR Forum.
For comprehensive information on PFE reefers see Pacific Fruit Express by Thompson, Church, and Jones.

Here are a couple of Reefer's (more or less) from Hornby (UK) and French Hornby.
First the "Milk Service Van" a sort of refer that just used ventilation from the cooler UK climate to keep the Milk fresh. Pre-nationalizarion "Southern RR" (pre 1948 IRL). This car from the late 40's.
The French National Railways national refrigerator service - car from French Hornby.
Best wishes

These Pentrate car sides were done as a reefer:
I have also seen them done as regular boxcars:
Note that the top car has not been varnished and retains its original colors.

I turned a stained/damaged Lionel 9805 'plug-door' into a Lackawanna reefer a few weeks ago. very simple conversion.
a light sanding with 600/1000 grit to knock down the original lettering, wash well with soapy water, two coats of 'red primer' from ace hardware, dry it for a day, k4 water-slide decals, boom!.
i'm partial to the erie/lackawanna from where i grew up in jersey
