Hello all,

Hope I’ve categorized this post correctly as it’s not related to any specific brand...

I often find myself shearing phillips’ screws on both my O and HO trains. This is not the result of excessive force as I am quite careful with my trains. Often I will simply use a straight blade to avoid damaging the screws. I believe I heard that there is such a thing as the “Japanese Industrial Standard” to which hardware used in model trains produced in Asia is made. Due to this, is it best to use JIS screwdrivers etc when working with trains generally, or is it more likely that the metal used in these screws is soft, causing this to happen. Am I correct about the JIS thing or is the hardware simply poor quality these days?

Thanks!!!

Actually, no,...JIS ( Japanese Industrial Standard) is a very good system. You need to get your hands on a set of JIS tipped screwdrivers for these types of fasteners. Using Phillips or any other of the variants will surely damage the screw head. Although JIS looks like Phillips, as you’re now finding out, it is not......several companies offer real deal JIS tipped drivers. Grainger is one good source these. My personal preference are the brand name of Moody.....Once you see how well a JIS driver fits in a JIS fastener, then you’ll have your ah-ha moment,...and you are in the wrong forum, so I’m sure all of this will go bye-byes,...

Pat,

Thank you so much for that feedback and your recommendations! I would gladly recategorize this post into whatever category it ought to be in however it does not appear I have the ability to change the category after posting! I took a screenshot just in case!!!

To clarify, it wasn’t my intention to denigrate JIS or Asian manufacturing, I was just wondering about the quality of the metal that is used. Thanks!
