I cannot help but wonder how the conventional Shinkansen will be affected. Nevertheless, it's exciting to see that a commercial maglev Shinkansen is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Little effect as the Tokaido Shinkansen is overloaded at peak times with trains every 4 minutes.
Where do trains run in Japan? Are all the islands connected, or are they farther apart,
such as the Hawaiian Islands where you have to fly or ferry? I assume one or more
is much larger than the big island in Hawaii?
Its getting to the point that soon Shinkansen lines will serve most of Japan. The oldest and busiest line is the Tokaido Shinkansen between Osaka and Tokyo. The Seikan Tunnel links the main island of Honshu to the north island of Hokkaido. There are plans to run standard gauge Shinkansen trains through this 3ft6in mainline tunnel.
The under sea station will close before Shinkansen service begins through the tunnel.
The other major sea crossing is the Great Seto Bridge across the Seto Inland Sea.
