Hi,
Does anyone know the name of Jim Policastro's unusual figurines that he puts on his layout? I seem to remember an article in OGR magazine about them. They are so unusual.

Are they the "Homies" line?
Jim talks about them in this post, but the pictures are gone.
Thank you. Homies is it. They are so cool.
Yep 'Homies'......I bought a few when they first came out but they scale out 7 to 8 feet tall so I put them in a box......when I find them again I'll offer them on the OGR for sale.
Amdave,
So they are 2 - 2 1/2" Remember in o scale 1" = 4'.

Coming from HO scale I am a bit of a scale snob.....so yes.
Here are a few shots of some of those interesting characters. Here they have gotten together for a red carpet event to celebrate the premier showing of the OGR video of my layout. As you can see, they are a big fan of Rich Melvin!
While they are definitely oversized, I always like to say that they represent those people in this world who are often referred to as "bigger than life".
Their different poses lend themselves to some interesting scenes such as arguing here about the salvage rights to this old car, or checking out the new taco stand.
They look best when they are kept away from all the "normal-sized" (true scale) people on the layout.
But, that is seldom a problem as the normals tend to keep their distance from these guys whenever they can!
Life on my layout definitely would not be as interesting without them.
Jim
The Homies--great characters that they are--are indeed a bit oversize for O scale, so they may not appeal to the scale purist. But they still look great on an O gauge layout so long as they are not positioned too close to true 1:48 scale figures.

Jim makes great use of them.......and if you have a Lionel crossing shack with the GIANT watchman they are no issue for sure! My rivet counting past comes back on items like this and I just can't use them. Others love them so when I find my stash of them I'll offer them up!

Amazon says they are 1.75" approx.

I get that they are not scale, but they look cool. I am more of an art over scale guy.
George
1.75" might be an average......see Jim's post for how many are sitting......I know for ME they were too big......PERFECT for use by those that like them!!!
I use them all the time now ever since Jim introduced us to them. They might be a hair too big but I think they fit nicely on an "O" layout. here are some scenes on my layout where I used them:
This one gives a good sense of their size relative to common vehicles:
They make great Halloweeners!!!
Look at the bottom left - there is a "regular" lady figure (waving) standing next to a Homie - you scan see that they're not crazy big

Great scenes Walt.
For the record, the only reason I opened this thread was to learn about Jim Policastro figurines.
And I'm very disappointed to learn that there are, in fact, no figurines of Jim Policastro.

Now that is funny!
We need to find somebody with a 3D printer to create one. I am sure Jim would put it on his layout!

Todd,
Actually, I thought the same thing when I first saw the title!!!
George,
If I were to fit right in with any group of model figures though, it would have to be the Homies! .....but what a waste of 3D printer supplies! ....the phrase "only a mother could love" comes to mind!

Are the "Big Jims" just behind schedule because "Clara Oswald" figures have swamped China?
Again as stated above theywork as long as they don't mingle with the tourists. I'm glad Don posted the picture from the Hi-Railers because I was thinking of that exact scene. The Homies line the street near the food trucks and do not look out of place and the scale people are populating the beach and hotel with the exception of one renegade Homie on the Hotel terrace holding a Mexican flag.
