JT's Megasteam revisited

I wonder if the train show batch was "watered down" with mineral oil or something by a vendor or previous owner to extend the "yield" or profits.

i dont think so, the vendor i purchased from is very reputable and i purchase a good bit of product from him and very fair prices.

i agree, i am a satisfied customer and plan on continuing use of megasteam. i may try some other flavors.

yes we have some awesome vendors here in the States and are always eager to help with an issue mega steam is great as far as i am concerned it smokes and is easy on the nose.

 

as a heads up after the smoke fluid has set around for a day or so shake the bottle up to ensure all is still mixed together.

am glad your issue has been resolved and that you can now attend to the fun part of running your trains.

What is the shelf life of smoke fluid?  If it is relatively short, maybe manufacturers should consider a Use By date.  

 

I stock up son smoke fluid at shows (1 bottle) and it lasts for years.  I don't compare smoke output because I use it in postwar steamers where the smoke output is generally anemic, at best.  I get the Cedar Scent because it reminds me of the postwar American Flyer scent.  I do think the scent is reduced over time.

Here is my 726RR with MegaSteam:

 

Jeb is a class act all the way.  The very first batch of hot chocolate didn't smell as much like chocolate. Jeb changed the formula and it smelled like a chocolate factory in my train room!  If I want just of a hint of a scent I'll mix "Nada" with the scent I want. I'll put 20 drops of Nada and 5 drops say vanilla. 

No clue about shelf life. But I did buy a bottle of coal scent from a different manufacture that stunk of burnt tires. Come to find out it was "expired".

Glad everything worked out. Jeb is a great guy! Gotta love that Mega Steam!

I used to buy in the large bottle but found out the same thing, buy the small bottles and use them up and order another one.  The scent does  have a very short shelf life and who knows how long the fluid sits on jebs shelf.

I love bayberry holiday as does my wife so no problems here.

Ditto that.    I have several large un-opened bottles that I bought a long time ago.  I only buy the scentless and am now curious.

Mega-Steam usually reads these posts with great interest and rarely posts. We attempt to solve problems behind the scenes. However, some clarification is necessary:

 

1.) We have a high-quality control system. There are no "bad batches." We test every batch for correct scenting and quality before shipping.

 

2.) There is no established "stale date" as such. If you store the bottle upright away from direct sunlight, and in a cool environment the bottle should last 2-3 years without any problems. Many customers report 4-5 years of use from the same bottle without any problems.  We have several "test" bottles that are 6-8 years old and still maintain good quality scent and smoke features.  We always suggest that "new smoke fluid is fresh and is always best." Large refill bottles are suggested for heavy users.  Most hobbyist use a 2 oz bottle over a 2-3 months of serious running.

 

3.) We don't have tons of inventory sitting on the shelf. We constantly rotate our product to assure customers that they are getting our very best product.  The problem comes in when our smoke fluid appears on the secondary market where someone has had it before. Also, each hobby shop dealer handles our product in their own way and we can only suggest that they keep fresh product available.

 

4.) Shake before using. Smell the bottle before using. If the scent is weak or gone, just replace the bottle with fresh product. We keep our prices reasonable so that you can replace frequently and not break the bank. The scenting is the key to determining the age with the exception of "NADA" which has no scent.

NADA is the best.  it is the sole reason i now run with smoke.

that was nice of you Jeb to take the time and respond and fill us all in seems like a lost service with most companies these days but a breath of fresh air to see you care.

 

I have tried other brands and have always returned to JT mega steam scents my wife has issues lung wise with all but Jt scented smoke and she picks the scents out herself!

I can attest to that.  I easily get ~5 years of use out of a bottle.  I don't use much fluid a ta time & I rotate use according to the season.

I met Jeb for the first time this York. Took him up on his WILL CALL service. Package was there waiting for me as promised. The smoke is great!! Jeb is one of the nicest dealers in the Orange Hall and my only regret is I never stopped by years earlier.

Thanks for the update "groundhog". Its always good when folks follow up  on the solution to a problem no matter what the problem.

 

Its obvious that Jeb is a class act, and a good buisnessman and its good you are now pleased with the product.

 

Good customer service is hard to come by these days, it nice to know, that of the small number of folks that "still care" a few can be found in this hobby.

Mine, too!  Problem is, I already smoke a pipe so I have to stick with the other "flavors."

Interesting thread. One thing I know I have ignored, "shake the bottle". With the contents being clear you never see any separation, but apparently they do!

I'll be dipped!  I never noticed the "shake before using" either!   Maybe it'll work even better?

I'm also on the Nada train, I buy it by the 8oz bottles.  Like Chris stated, it is great to tame down various scents so you can be a heavy smoker.  Running trains wouldn't be the same without MegaSteam!
