Special run for The Train Loft
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Nice! Another one where I must have missed the announcement.
Me too. I have room set aside for the brewery. Construction needs to get underway. Then I'll have to have a representative sample of this new MTH car, in order to join its brethren "down to da plant", on the spur.

I miss that fire brewed taste !
Nice I just ordered one. STROHS spelled backwards is SHORTS? That’s what we use to call it.😁
I remember Strohs Brewery. I use to pull for National Can Co. delivering a load of cans there. Remember the drivers waiting room had a tap in the wall and glasses on a table. Bet brewery's don't do that anymore.
Strohs use to make premium ice cream also.
Drank a lot of Strohs in college, mainly their half quart cans. Cheap, always available, there was one time my roommates cleaned out my refrigerator stock of Strohs.
I remember talking to my dad about Stroh's. He was from Detroit and used to talk about their bright red panel trucks (1930s) with gold lettering.
We got a later version of Stroh's in the 70s when it was more widely distributed. Had a pretty good run. As mentioned, the price was right!

As is the tradition in brewing in Germany, there was indeed free beer at the brewery, to begin with for employees at lunch. And as Clem has pointed out, truck drivers as well.
My Dad learned first hand that it also extended to construction workers from outside firms who happened to be working on the plant when his company took on a major upgrade project there. This was in the early 70's if I remember correctly.
I think the free beer lasted until the nationwide drunk driving crackdown became serious in the early 80's.
Although the brewery is long gone, torn down, the ice cream plant is still in operation as far as I know.
My aunt was a secretary in the executive offices back in the day, and my neighbor, a G Scale afficianado who has a nice collection of suitably sized Stroh's reefers, worked in IT there until very near the end.
For a good article on the Stroh family, the company's history, and how the end came about, follow this link:

Wow! Look at those colors!
That's one of the nicest reefers I have seen in awhile.
Stroh's was very actively and aggressively advertised in my home town for a while. As always, l want to know if that car existed in service on the railroads?
Fantasy or not, that's one of the sharpest reefers I've seen! Great artwork/graphics.
Ah, Stroh’s… as a teenager growing up in Cleveland in the 60’s and early 70’s, Stroh’s was a right of passage. Back then, inOhio an 18 year old could legally purchase 3.2% alcohol beer. Stroh’s was available everywhere and was cheap. We didn’t care if the alcohol content was lower than regular beer; to us it was nectar of the Gods. Boxcar is beautiful.
Got my Stroh's Beer Reefer coming!
Check out Jeff at the Train Loft (336-760-9817) for this special run. He has some left in stock but they are going fast!

Thanks for the tip, Frank!
I also picked up one of the Carling Black Label Reefers from Stockyard last year. Great looking cars.
I don't know who makes it, but the Stroh's brand of ice cream is still sold in the Detroit area.
Clyde has a winner. That reefer looks great.

I missed out on the Carling reefers and now I'm kicking myself!
FYI - For those that missed the first runs, Jeff at The Train Loft is doing another run of the Stroh's reefers (2 road #'s). He is also commissioning flat cars with Stroh's PUP trailers.
The order forms are attached below.
