I am trying to save a little cash for York. (first timer). I walked into my LHS in Montoursville, PA the store manager offers me a deal of 6 consecutively numbered  MTH Premiere Reading RR coal cars for $160.

I am conflicted. They are wood sided but they do look nice. I guess what I "might" find at York and the camaraderie I hope to find need to trump this offer.

What do you think?

From your post I get the impression that since the cars are wood they are out of your preferred modeling era. If so I would pass on them and save that $160 for York. As a first-timer you will be like a kid in a candy store, and I am sure that you will find other deals at York that will make you glad you passed on the MTH coal hoppers.

Michael:

Save the $160 for York.  Last spring was my first York and thank God I had been saving money for it!  Having flown up, I had to make use of the UPS store at the fairgrounds to ship Max and I's purchases home.  This actually kept me within my York budget as I had already shipped two expensive boxes home and then wandered into the Silver Hall and found still more stuff that I "had to have".  Since I wasn't going to go broke shipping a third box UPS, I practiced restraint and only purchased two more boxcars which I could carry home on the plane with me.

In any event, keep the cash for York.  I doubt you will regret it.

Jerry - good insight on the "out of era" comment. Sometimes what I think is a good price motivates me to buy stuff I really don't need.

What you are discovering is a well known pre York phenomenon that can be expected to intensify as we get closer to the meet. Remember: 1) members are not the only ones who look for liquidation bargains; many B&Ms start raising cash for big lot sales too.  Eastern vendors are also aware that post York brings a drought in all types of toy train sales.

I told myself that if I didn't win too much, I'd make York.  Oh well!

I know the feeling. I wonder if I can temporarily disable my PayPal account??

I know the feeling. The past few years I've been slowly getting back into going to York since my life has settled down quite a bit so I try to save as much as I can for York. Problem is I keep running across these really great deals on Ebay and I wind up spending most of my annual train budget on these instead of waiting to see if I can find them at York. Problem is if I wait til York and I don't see it it seems to dry up on Ebay so I'm d***ed if I do, d***ed if I don't.
