I figured I would post this because I got the idea for my design from looking at other display shelves posted on OGR forum. Hopefully, this is useful to someone considering building display shelves (Its a lot easier than you may think). This has been a project I had been meaning to do for a while. This is the first of many display shelves to come. Basically, my issue (a good issue to have) is that I have many trains and plan on purchasing many more. Unfortunately most of them are "stored" on a pingpong table, random areas of my layout and in boxes under my layout. This is not very helpful when I want to change what I have on the track as I have to unpack and/or search all over the place for what I want to run. Also, Its been a very long time since I have played pingpong on my pingpong table . Most of my sets are long 21" GGD passenger sets and long freight trains. For a long time I have wanted to be able to enjoy looking at them even when they are not on the layout. I have a limited amount of wall space as my layout is eye level (5 feet off the floor) and wanted to get as many of my trains on shelves as possible without them looking too cluttered. It is for this reason that I chose to build my shelves in a 3 deep/staggered design. It took some time messing around with how much space I needed to be able to access the back of the three shelves but I finally settled on a design. This first attempt at building my design was done in a 4 foot section and will occupy a small wall by the entrance to my train room. It was more or less a trial run for the 12 foot section I will build next which I will display my passenger sets on. The 12 foot shelving unit will have additional supports but will still maintain the same look and design as this 4 foot section. I will try to take and post pictures of the construction process when I build the 12 foot shelving unit and maybe some plans on how to build them if anyone is interested. Also, I realize that these are not stained with any finish. Currently, I do not plan on staining them. If all goes well I will have the 4 foot section hung tomorrow. Now for some pictures.....

John, no one has commented on this, so I thought I would add my two cents.  The pattern layout for your hole drilling is superb!  What a great idea.  I'm always trying to figure how to get the holes drilled into the hidden shelves, and sometimes miss by just a little bit, but then I have a major repair to perform.  Your idea with the grid pattern takes all the guess work out of the equation.  GREAT!

I am happy to have received so many comments and questions. To answer some questions I have received regarding the shelves.

1) At the moment I am designing a simple way to add on sliding doors. They will be added at a later date.

2) I still do not have any plans to stain them. However, it can easily be accomplished later on as everything has been put together with screws and dissasembles easily.

3) The shelving unit will very securily mount to the wall. The braces in the back have been designed to be the same spacing as the studs in my train room. I will try and post some pictures of the back to show this.

LOS, Where did you get the LED strips that you used on your display shelves?

Also... As promised, here are some pictures of the back of the shelving unit and the shelving unit after it was hung.

A pic of the back... Ignore the random holes and slots in the wood... I used scrap wood for the back braces

This is a pic of one of the holes which the bolts will go thru when mounting to the studs

Here is a pic of how I gridded one of the sides in order to allow for accurate and simple shelf placement

Here are a few pics of the shelving unit hanging by the entrance to my train room (you will take note that my favorite model of my favorite passenger train fits nicely on it... the Golden Gate Depot '38 TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED...

Also the clamp on the top left is holding down a little piece of wood that I nicked and need to glue back in place
