Crank up your subwoofers for this departure starting about 1:35 in. At about the fifth well car, the howling becomes audible, and just get faster and faster as this train pulls boogeys out from a dead stop (crew change) at Fullerton, CA.

I don't recall what causes this sound, but it sure makes for a dramatic departure

I would imagine the ground rail makes for good grip as well. Engineers like that sort of thing.

Actually, no. The smoother and cleaner the rail head is, the better the adhesion between the wheel and rail. I have seen some REALLY high adhesion levels on nice hot, dry days, where the rail has been especially clean, smooth and dry!
