So we have a K3003 and K3010 K-Line 4-6-2 engines.  I'm looking at the manual and not seeing the answer, so I thought I'd ask here:

How do you turn off the smoke unit?  I see a switch for the reverser, but not the smoke.  As we in all likelihood will never add smoke fluid, I suspect the smoker would burn out rather quickly.  I'd also prefer to keep the ability to have smoke at some future point if and as desired.  Where is the smoke switch? Is there a switch?

Thank you.

I don't believe these locos had a switch.  The 3003 and 3010 were entry-level locos which also appeared in some of K-Line's contemporary train sets.  Lionel's entry level steam locos from this period also lacked an on-off switch for smoke.  That feature came in the late '90s or early 2000s.

These locos have a pretty anemic Seuthe smoke unit which works best (in my experience) with LGB smoke fluid, or another of a light, thin formulation.  Even so, it takes a long time to vaporize, it spits all over the top of the loco, and then runs out of fluid pretty quickly.

If you don't want to keep refilling the smoke unit, you're concerned about burnout, and you want to preserve the option of using it in the future, you can remove the boiler shell and then cut or unsolder the wire that supplies the smoke element with power.  My $.02.

Thank you for your input.

We recently purchased a bottle of scent-free smoke fluid from the Mega Steam brand. Does this count as light or heavy?
