Hello All!

Just started working on cataloging for the Stout Auctions June event. There are some incredibly neat modern trains in this group. One of the highlights that I've seen so far is what appears to be a complete K Line American Freedom Train set with the GS-4 and 21 inch aluminum passenger cars. Over the past five or so years I know the set has become very tough to acquire and I'm trying to find out how many cars make up the complete set. If anyone could help me out with a number it would be greatly appreciated. I keep getting reminded how amazing some of the K Line products were near the end of the company. Not only are the cars beautiful, but the original boxes for the cars are really nice to look at as well.

Thanks for the help!

Derek

The real AFT had 26/27 cars.  K-Line originally made 17 of them, all based on their 18" streamlined aluminum passenger cars:

2 showcase cars

10 display cars (each car covered 20 years of American history)

4 crew cars (very hard to find since fewer of this set was made)

1 Observation car

After these cars, K-Line made what is called the museum car, a 11th display car that covered the years from 1977-1996.  I assume if K-Line was still here they would have made another car in 2016.

In addition to Ed's excellent article, you can go to http://freedomtrain.org/ for more information on the real train and a short discussion on the K-Line models.

I have the complete set of cars but not the engine.  The engine is semi-scale so I didn't buy it; kind of dumb in hind sight.  I have the MTH scale AFT engines that I will use to pull the cars.

18 is CORRECT...most forget the Museum Car...18 x 18"= 27 foot train...to which you can add the MTH GS-4 or T-1 scale locos...so you can split the 18 cars into 2 trains, each 16 foot in length!!! WOWSERS!!!  FYI, I have the K-Line Semi-scale loco & tender...I will be placing this on our Sale Board shortly!!!  Also, I picked up the MTH Scale AFT Auxiliary Tender!!!

The full train is very impressive.  With a helper diesel (MTH made several Bicentennial diesels that lashup well with either the GS-4 or T-1) and the train going at 45 mph, it takes 23 seconds to pass you.  All the cars are exceptionally well done and closely match the prototype.  I wish K-Line would have made a few more, especially the entrance and exit cars, and the bunk/generator car.
