I think the "chuff" you are hearing while stationary is the sound of the air compressor. The chuff switch is in the engine. If you don't get a chuff sound then the mechanical micro switch needs adjustment or the tether connector is not fully seated or a connector pin is bent. Pull out the connector and make sure all the pins on the engine side are OK then reattach the connector and try it. If still no chuff then its most likely the switch near the front axle.

Thanks for the reply. I took the shell off last night but couldn't find the switch. Tried to find a schematic online but couldn't. K-Line sent me a new switch years ago which I have. Any pointers would be much appreciated. I shelved this engine years ago and would love to get it going with sounds.

Thanks again!!

One other note - Even when the switch fails, you may still hear one chuff at the start of movement. This is due to the fact that the first chuff is triggered from the board and not the chuff switch.

I've had to replace the chuff switches on all three of my small, scale steamers.

Many times these switches are located near the front of the loco and can be easily contaminated with leaking smoke fluid.
