K-Line F-7 Question

I just purchased a pair of Great Northern K-Line F-7s A units (K25332) which are in pretty good shape. This morning, however, I had trouble finding the volume control on the engine. The books indicates it is there but there is no diagram and its location was not apparent to me. Can anyone steer my in the right direction?

Also, the diaphragms are, of course, not in great shape. I read that there are no replacement ones available anymore. Has anyone come up with another solution to replace the original diaphragms?

On the mine, it is underneath and behind the front trunk on the lead engine. The smoke on / off is right next to it.
