I'm thinking about buying some K-Line F units but seem to remember K-Line made two different motor configurations for their F units but can't remember the details.  Any info on the motor configs, which is preferable, which to avoid, and any way to idenify preferable versions when searching the secondary market would be greatly appreciated.

You can look at pictures of the locomotives' undersides. That will show you if there are motors in the trucks.

If you look at a side view, look at the power pickup position. The Vertical motor "China drive" locos have the pickups mounted approximately in the middle of the trucks. The truck mounted motors have the pickups on the very edge of the trucks, towards the center of the locomotive.

From my foggy memory, the road names most likely to have the truck mounted motors are PRR, B&O, and Western Pacific.
