I have a 5-car SP Daylight Heavyweight set that has a disintegrated truck on the Observation car.

It appeared that new 6-wheel Atlas trucks would be the fix, but alas that is not the case.  The Atlas trucks are larger, and do not have the copper axle wipers nor wiring accommodation. Upon disassembling the trucks, it is apparent that the K-Line wiring base will not swap with the Atlas.

Also, the Atlas trucks rely on a vertical pin with spring for the center rail contact roller. The pin will make contact with the stamped metal bottom of the car. Having voltage transfer directly from the track center rail to the metal base would likely cause some fireworks.

It appears that the only way to get this set back on the rails is to find a good set of original K-line trucks. So it looks like I'll have to monitor eBay and may have to buy a complete car just for the trucks.

The Atlas Premier 6-axle trucks are MTH tooling.  Atlas Trainman 6-axle trucks that were used on their 60' cars are a different mount.  They might work, but they aren't available for separate sale and Atlas has not run those cars in a while, especially after purchasing rights to the MTH tooling.

I would agree that Lionel and K-line trucks are very similar.  I would need to have dig a little to put two side by side to see how close they really are though.  Purchasing a car would likely be your best option and then you could sell the remaining parts or convert the truck less car into a yard master's office which was a fairly common practice for heavyweight cars.
