NYC Tank Engine smoked when I turned on the 18 vac. This has TMCC with ODY. Looks like the motor driver board and possibly the power supply for the sound are toast.

The motor board looks like a regulator next to the diode bridge might have shorted. Anyway there is a crumb or two next to it where I removed a two pin small connector.

The sound board just really seems to have goo on it from melting wiring above it...can't tell and odd that there would be this much goo. Maybe the goo is from the heat above it melting some coating on the solder side of the board.

Anyway...not sure how to proceed. No K Line parts? Maybe I can install an RR Cruise M and...not sure about the sound PS board and how to go about it.

It's kind of a nice engine...maybe sell it for parts? If I don't have a clear path.

So far I think the motor drive board shorted somehow...maybe the reg chip next to the diode rectifier...if that’s what that chip is. Then the area under the multi pin connector at the far edge of the board got very hot...heating up the wiring there and the sound power supply below it.

This is a classic failure Chuck.  If it's any consolation (probably not), I have several of the K-Line cruise boards in a junkbox with the same area burned up.   Apparently, there's some design flaw with that board as it's very common for them to go up in smoke.

I'd take a toothbrush with alcohol and scrub the back of the sound board, it's probably not dead.

You can replace the K-Line cruise module with the Cruise Commander M, but there's a catch.  In the tank engine, K-Line generated the chuff from the cruise module, and also controlled the smoke fan.

I have a tank engine sitting in the closet with a dead cruise board, I'll be upgrading that one with the Cruise Commander M, Super-Chuffer II and Chuff-Generator.

Hi John

Cruise Commander M, Super-Chuffer II and Chuff-Generator sounds like the plan. I put it in a box in the garage, so it's going to be awhile probably. Except for the mdr board and the sound board being with goo, the rest of it looks fine. I need to put a couple one inch shrink tubes over a few wires that got lightly cooked on one spot. Thanks for the tips and the reply.
