I have a K-Line RS-3 with TMCC & Cruise Control. I have a love/hate relationship with this engine. It was my very first "premier" engine I ever got. I received it while in middle school and it ran conventionally at my local train club. So it holds sentimental value. Unfortunately several years later this engine became plagued with problems. The engine doesn't run well in Cruise control. It likes to crawl then take off like a race car then suddenly crawl again. The horn also likes to blow at random times and sometimes gets stuck on. I have heard these engines had board problems. I never bothered to fix the engine because eventually I aquired more engines and it took a place on my display shelf. Also there's currently no Lionel repair tech I know of in my area. My questions are:

1. Are these symptoms of board failures or something else?

2. Are replacement boards available?

3. Would it be worth the trouble/cost to replace the board?

I have a CTR RS3 from K-line.  No cruise control.  If it has Odyssey cruise, it will have a seperate Odyssey switch.   Mine moves off well at step 1 with 2 motors, almost too well.  No room for a battery for the sound backup.    I had an engine working as you state, even with Odyssey cruise enabled.  It had a traction tire stuck in the works where you couldn't see it.  I would look for something mechanical first.  Is the motor flywheel rubbing on the inside?   The horn, I don't know.  You could try to re-seat the boards also.  Pull them as if taking them off the pins, but just about .1"/2.5mm and then push back on.  I did that on mine before I did much with it since it had been on the shelf for an extended time.   If you pull them all the way off the pins, make sure they go back correctly!  They will be damaged if mis-aligned.

K-Line never had Lionel Odyssey, they had their own design cruise board.  They actually used an optical chopper wheel like the Lionel Legacy.  Sadly, the K-Line cruise modules are one of the weak spots with K-Line, they can go wonky and they also frequently literally burn up!

The cure is usually the ERR Cruise Commander M to replace it.  There are a few K-Line models that will have additional complications, the K-Line tank engine uses the K-Line Cruise to generate the chuff and also control the smoke unit fan, so you have to replace those functions as well.

@Norton - Hey Pete, thanks for attaching the link from the K-Line Cruise Manual. Since I own a couple of K-Line engines with Cruise I took a look see at what it said and, although it may be a moot point, there’s one thing I’d like clarified.

At the very end under Add on from OGR Forum it outlines a procedure “To set speed steps with Kline cruise” and my question is - Haven’t they neglected to mention, regardless of which of the 3 speed steps one wants to choose, to press the Set button as the very last step? 🤫
