K-Line's "aquarium car" was not really "operating."  It was an aluminum-bodied car with an internal sealed tank of "liquid" that had plastic fish floating inside.  It was a real liquid, but I am pretty sure it couldn't have been only water.  K-Line only produced it in two schemes before it went under.  I have the first... I think it was called "Quint's Traveling Aquarium."   The liquid makes it a very heavy bugger!

Yea, i don't get what K-Line was thinking when they designed this car.  Maybe they weren't.....LOL  I'd be curious to know what the life span of these cars would be.

Yeah, when I first opened up the box and was surprised at what K-Line had created (I don't remember K-Line saying anything about real water[?] in the catalog), the first thing that I thought of was "How long is that liquid going to last"? Looks like the one in the video has lost some liquid on top of the "dead" fish!
I need to get mine out and see how it is constructed. It might be a good candidate for a (dry) undersea diorama. Thanks for getting the creative juices flowing!

So I have a question about the Lionel versions with the gear driven mechanism.  I noticed that some of the newer issues have a gear, driven by another gear on the truck.  How reliable are these ?   I do have the Williams by Bachmann cop and hobo gondola that is gear driven and it works well.  However, the car needs to be facing the correct way, otherwise the cop and hobo are really good at keeping their balance running backward.
