My K-Line semi-scale daylight has a piston type smoke unit and I would like it gone because the locomotive is very jerky at slow speeds. How can it be removed? The engine sat on a shelf for about 5-6 years before being ran again in March of 2014. Also can a MTH or Lionel fan driven smoke unit be put in the old smoke units place (if I want a smoke unit in)?

Clip the wire, remove the screws and pull it out. Yes if there is room, and there should be a Lionel or MTH fan driven smoke unit can be added. If this is conventional I would go with MTH PS-1 , if TMCC probably a Lionel unit. G

Thanks GGG. This engine has TMCC. How much are Lionel smoke units?
You can replace the piston unit but the reason for jerky motion is likely a plugged vent hole. If you disassemble the unit you will likely see where the problem is. Make sure the piston moves freely before reinstalling. If you put a fan unit it you will likely want to add a new chuff switch to give you either 2 or 4 chuffs or else just let the fan run continuously.

Lionel units run about $35. DO a search on this forum and you will see several smoke upgrades folks have done with how to do it threads. G
GGG,
Where can one be purchased at?
I've removed a number of the K-Line piston smoke units in favor of fan driven smoke. Since the K-Line part is so large, fitting the fan driven smoke isn't a problem, at least it's never been in any of my upgrades.
You can buy Lionel smoke units directly from Lionel. This is a good candidate for most steamers. This will work for conventional or TMCC applications, price $30.
