So I purchased one of these at a very good price.  I know they're not the best quality, but I am looking for some moving accessories to place around the layout, yet to be.  I recall having one of these 35 years ago and fiddling with it to get the beacon to rotate.  This is the version that has the beacon that operates on the heat of the bulb.

I cannot recall what I did back then to get it to turn.  The beacon is balanced and I have fiddles with the vanes on top, to no avail.  The power is set to 14-16 volts.

Don, I've done two do-it-yourself tricks to make those dimple-bulb type of rotating beacons work better.

One is to affix a small DC motor somewhere near the top of the beacon tower. The motor when it is on will create some vibration on the tower and will cause the beacon top piece to slowly being to rotate, regardless of bulb voltage.

The other way, which I have read others also do, is to hide a brushless computer hard drive fan in the vicinity of the beacon tower, aimed at the tower. Again, the beacon top will rotate regardless of the bulb voltage. Of course, here the distance of the fan to the tower will determine how fast that beacon top will rotate.

I've also made my own dimple bulbs by heating a bulb over the gas jet on the stove. This is something of an acquired skill, as it is also not impossible to really distort the shape of the bulb. It didn't take me long to get it mastered, so I can use lower voltage bulbs that match the other bulbs I have on my secondary power.

This year for the Christmas putz I bought an inexpensive aquarium air pump and ran clear plastic tubing up into the tower with a fashioned(from a vacuum hose barb) orifice at the tip. It powered up with the transformers, as soon as power came on it started rotating.  In addition to arranging the position, distance, & aim of the tube in the tower, the pump also come with a small metering valve for fine tuning. The results were fantastic, I turned the bulb power down to a comfortable level for appearance, and did not have to break into my spares. The pump tubing can be T'ed off for use in several towers as needed.
