Hi All,

I have just taken delivery on one of the above - fantastic detail, I am now pretty well hooked on these smaller K Line engines as they fit my layout perfectly.

I have 2 questions though.

1) Mine has TMCC and "K Line Cruise" - is this the same as Lionels and can it be set/altered in conventional?

2)Second question is about smoke output. This engine has a fan driven unit. When I got it output was almost nil. I have changed the wading and it now smokes well but only on full power but still very poorly at normal speed. Has anyone a mod for this or is it a case of changing an element or is this as good as it gets ( I am sure it is fine in TMCC mode). My other K Line engine which has their piston smoke unit works brilliantly. Any Ideas?

Many thanks

MIKE

K-Line cruise is similar but not the same as Lionel's. They are not interchangeable. You loose the constant speed ability when running in conventional.

The resistor in the smoke unit is optimized for command (18-20 volts AC). Current command engines have a voltage regulator so you get full output at around 6-8 volts on the track. You could put a lower value resistor in there (8-9 ohms) and then build a regulator that would output no more than 7-9 volts but I don't think there is an off the self board that will do that directly without modification. Depending on your electronic knowledge it could be done though.

Mike,

I think it is similar. According to the manual for mine, in conventional operation the cruise feature can be disabled by moving the Cruise On/Off switch to off. There is no way to set speed steps.

If you are using TMCC, you can set the speed steps from 32 to 128 to 256 using DIR, BELL, AUX 1, 2, or 3 respectively.

Mike,

You might want to measure the value of the resistor. 27 ohm wire wound resistors get wired directly to the track. If yours is within a few ohms of this you could try wiring the smoke unit either directly to the track or through another switch. Right now its wired to the R2LC (radio board) and may not see maximum track voltage even in conventional.

K-Line cruise was an unauthorized knock off of the first version of Lionel Odyssey. This action was part of the huge K-Line/Lionel lawsuit  that eventually brought K-Line down. K-Line hired the same guy who designed the original Lionel odyssey to design K-Line cruise "after hours," so to speak.

Eventually the cops seized his computer and his "work."

While the original Lionel Odyssey was jerky, the K-Line cruise was the worst in the business. The rest of the K-Line model is fine, but the cruise... not so much.
