I heard a story at our club meeting that our club president told. Some group has approached the KRM at New Haven Ky, about doing a full restoration to operation of the locomotive (C&O 2716).

I don't know where they would run it, unless the CSX would loosen it's grip on Steam Locomotives on their Railroad.

This announcement is supposedly to be made in Feburary, and the exact date has something to do with the numbers "2716", but what ever. I'll believe it when I hear/see the announcement is made.

It would look like 1st consideration would be the C&O 614 that's at Clifton Forge, Va.

Do you think the CSX is softening it's point of view, because the 765 and now J 611, is making so many positive points with the "Public", and drawing nothing but rave reviews?????  Guess it will be a wait and see, not unlike the plans of the Durbin and Green Valley Railroad in WV.......................Brandy!

Frankly I don't think public opinion has anything to do with it. If there's worthwhile money to be made, no rule is absolute.

Don't forget that 90+% of these projects are pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams too. Of course if you didn't start any of them based on those odds, the <10% that do get finished would never happen, and we'd all be running along an abandoned railbed chanting "chugga-chugga chugga-chugga, chooo! chooooooo!"

IMO, if public opinion or otherwise didn't matter, society of today wouldn't be so concerned with being "Politically Correct", on 99 44/100% of all issues.

In my opinion, it really isn't THAT much "public opinion" related, but more about the news media constantly give these minority views all the attention. I personally believe the vast majority of Americans are TOTALY fed-up with all the "political correctness" bs.

Yes, I thought the same thing when I heard the statement being told. I know that the 2789 has been in some state of being restored, but how far along are they who knows?

Through stories being told here it is a very expensive endevour to take on. Even if you have all of the dollars, then there is the help issues.............

I'm like you, as I would like/love to see either of these locomotives running, on the CSX Lines again!..........

Well, again just my opinion but, I would think that the Kentucky Railway Museum would be much better off spending funds on the current overhaul of their beautiful L&N Pacific #152. I have seen some nice color photos of the flues/tubes being removed recently. The #2716 would need major firebox work, if not a total replacement, as I remember.

I wonder if it ever comes up at these, "wouldn't it be cool if...?" meetings that someone points out all the restored and runnable steam that currently has nowhere to run or sat out the rest of it's 15 year flue time on a siding without running at all (like 1522 at St Louis)...

I never saw 2716 running for the SRR steam program, but I do agree their money would be better spent on L&N 152...

And a smaller locomotive has less clearance and weight issues.

And take less of the green fuel to run and keep up:  MONEY!

I thought she had something about bad leaking  problem.Or some thing to do with her pipes.I do think its a darn shame L&N did not save one or two of their berkshires .Or big emma as they called them.Any body know weather she stored inside a building somewhere?

That is why they are now doing the complete FRA mandated 15 year inspection and work on her boiler.

I didn't mean to overlook L&N 152. It is being restored to operation by the KRM Group themselves. I don't know who can do what at their facility.

One of their officers comes to Greenbo Train Show every year, and sets up a booth for the KRM.

This gentleman told me spring 2015, that they were getting ready to start the overhaul soon on their L&N 152.  Which as "Hot Water points" out has been started. They were going to raise about a 1/4 million to get this done. Even though engine is a LT.Pacific, I did think that it would cost at least twice that amount!

I asked about the old C&O 2716, and he told me that the 2716 was in extremely bad shape, and probably looking at a Million + Dollars.

+ no where to do the physical work.  If all that was accomplished they had no where to run it, and at the time CSX wouldn't let it on their system.

So L&N #152 is in the works!

Yes, it does "Hot", the KRM Officer I spoke with said that the crown sheet was cracked. Now, How bad, and where, I wouldn't have the slightest.

I'll triple the motion!  The Press/Media have forgotten how to INVESTIGATE!

Fort Wayne RRHS leased her, made some fire box repairs, and ran her for one season around 1997. Do a search and you'll see videos of her running around Logansport, IN.  FWRRHS could not get a flue time extension I think because of the new FRA rules, so they decided to not put anymore money into her to focus on the 765 rebuild.  I'm sure Rich can provide more info and correct my memory.
