I always get such a laugh over the discussion of some of the plain axle bearings on some steam locomotives, or historical diesels, when it comes to moving equipment on todays railroads. Apparently all those members in the current railroad Mechanical Departments, have absolute no knowledge of current DC traction diesel locomotives, i.e. those equipped with DC traction motors and NOT AC traction motors, as they ALL have plain bearings, which support the DC traction motor on each axle.

It's amazing to me how the North American railroads ever survived with all that equipment riding on plain bearings, at speeds up to, and exceeding, 100 MPH!

Not a federal regulation. These un-informed "policies" on many of the class 1 railroads come from people in their Mechanical Departments that are either afraid of steam locomotives and ANYTHING antiquated, or simply generate such a "policy" so as to prevent "old equipment" from their lines.
