I tapped a series on TV about abandoned structures. Mysteries of the abandoned series 1 episode 3. It covered the Kinzua viaduct in PA.

It looks like a great episode on how the bridge was constructed and showing why it failed to high winds, probably more easily than it should have.

Sadly the bridge was in the process of rebuild when this happened.

The ride from Marienville to the Kinzua Bridge was simply marvelous.

When the bridge toppled the state was unable/unwilling to spend to rebuild it in it's entirety.

I believe the tracks were at the time owned by the Kovalchick family and given their limited free capital the entire line was abandoned and most was pulled up.

Sad since the whole trip was under 20 bucks!

Hi Rule 292, Actually  the Knox & Kane was owned by Sloan Cornell and although the Kinzua Viaduct was a PA. State Park, he had a lease to operate on it. He also rebuilt the abandoned Erie Railroad tracks from Mt. Jewett, PA. to the Viaduct area. After the destructive tornado and the arson fire at Kane, PA., not to mention the Gettysburg boiler incident, the Cornells soon ran out of the railroad business. The auction at Kane, PA. was when the Kovalchick company became involved, but only to purchase the line for scrapping. The remaining assets were sold to many others. A sad tale, but it has been better related by others.  An excellent reference is Ghost Rails VIII The Northern Sub by Wayne A. Cole.  Don
