Through the years, I've heard of KTM, but never had any. Picked this up a month ago and just got the motor serviced. Runs very smooth, but is noisy. It appears to have never been more than test run so I assume it will quiet down some as it breaks in although with the open gears I'm sure it would still be noisy. Anyone know when it was made?

I really like the engine. It looks like an AME7 transported to the 1950's in terms of styling, and the color scheme in a variation of blue reminds me of the more adventurous automotive colors of that era before everything came out in shades of grey, or severely muted. I wonder if the prototype was passenger or dual service? Looks good on the layout. What is the width and length of your layout? I see you can run several engines at once...The best I have been able to shoe horn are three loops.

KTM made an array of Japanese prototype electric engines in the 50's that started out as tin plated steel models and progressed to brass.  These were available in 2 and 3 rail versions.  Drive system is known to be rather marginal and noisy is about as good as they get w/o a lot fo tinkering to perfect alignment of all the gearing.  Bearings on the trucks are generally zamac and also prone to pest problems; replacements used to be available but no idea who that was a long time ago...

KTM later became on the better known makers of imported brass locomotives, etc....

I don't have a layout at the moment, just portables that I take to shows & meets. No room to set those up at home.  That layout is at the local train store where I work a couple days a week.
