About a year ago I was lucky enough to pick up A USH UP 4-8-2 but had a clearly different gearbox than the standard U-100 model on KTM pieces. This one indicates Icken and as pictured is a nonidler type with a large wormgear as pictured. Reputedly Icken built sturdy stuff. Picked up another one recently in a USH ATSF 4-6-2 recently with the same set up. Anyone know more about theses Icken modified pieces.

That’s a Fred Icken gear box, …..indestructible, & bulletproof,…..you lucky SOG!….best gear box in the industry IMO, ……pack it with good quality grease, oil the shaft ends, button it up, and never worry about as long as we live,…..

Thanks for the info. We have all heard of Jerry White, Sofue, Stu Kleinschmidt, etc modified USH stuff but Icken not so much except that he was a great scratch builder. One wonders how many Icken modified pieces are out there?

I can only speak for Icken built engines from the 30's & 40's ....they were built to run forever !
