Hi all,
One side of my KW throttle started working intermittently. Sometimes the throttle works, sometimes it doesn't (nothing regardless of throttle position). It does put out voltage if I move the whistle switch, and it varies with the throttle position. Any ideas?

Better check on the condition of the carbon rollers.
The previously mentioned carbon rollers or the contacts for the pushbutton circuit interrupters may need to be cleaned.

As I open it I see the metal tabs that are used to secure the top plate on the transformer. I assume I just use pliers to carefully twist these straight to allow the plate to lift off. Is there any risk of breaking these tabs?

I have repaired many KW transformers and if you are careful, the tabs you refer to our relatively tough. To remove the cover I only turn the tabs a distance that is absolutely necessary. Don’t overturn them. You can also use a small screwdriver very gently to help lift the cover off the tabs. Also, when replacing the cover be sure to turn the tabs back in the same direction you originally found them. Don’t turn the tabs any farther than absolutely necessary.
