Lackawanna ID - what did I see?

What you likely saw was the NS 1074, which is a NS Heritage unit. There are 20 of them, one each in a predicessor road that became part of NS. BTW, the unit is an SD70ACe.

And they would use this engine in everyday freight hauling?

Yes, and the other 19. NS is not the only railroad to do this. Amtrak, UP, CSX, CP et. al. all have "heritage" units. Check this link to find out where they are.

Thanks Chris, that was possibly the coolest train moment I've ever had, seeing a paint scheme to a livery that I loved as a kid, but never saw in real life til now! I guess I'll keep my camera handy when I hit that crossing again!

Norfolk Southern published this picture about 10 years ago at the round house in Spencer NC.

You can also go to heritageunits.com to see the latest reported location of the NS, UP, Amtrak, and other special or heritage units - or just units still wearing original paint, like Santa Fe or BN units on BNSF.

p.s. one of the most interesting Norfolk Southern heritage units is 8114, which is painted for...Norfolk Southern. Today's Norfolk Southern is the result of a merger of Norfolk & Western and the Southern Ry. in 1982, but years before that there was a small railroad called Norfolk Southern. It eventually became part of the Southern.

It really is a cool paint scheme.

I lived all my life here in NJ, so I really enjoy all of Norfolk Southern's heritage units. Clicking on the thumbnail images at NS's website ... NORFOLK SOUTHERN'S HERITAGE LOCOMOTIVES ... will give clear photos.

Since you are in New Jersey, go searching for NS 1700!

It is an ex EL SD45-2 painted in the EL paint scheme. If you liked the Lackawanna, you will love this!

Thanks for the link, I totally enjoyed seeing all those engines in full size, color, and detail. The Jersey Central was an especially stunning photo!

And as for my grandson, well.. he's busy 13 yr old right now, trying to negotiate a deal with a seller for a Lionel Coin Bank! He didn't fall too far from that tree

Has the NS heritage unit painted in Southern green and white been repaired and repainted after it struck a mudslide and turned onto its side?

The Hertitage Unit site's last report is for 12/12/2021. Reporting is currently suspended until it is repaired and operating. Speculation (and that's all it is) is the unit is in Conway or Altoona. So I think the short answer to your question is "No."
