I decided to take the plunge and buy a Form Labs Ver 2 3D laser printer. I have dozens of train, scenic and building items I will be designing on SketchUp  and converting to a format for this printer to mesh and print.

FOR starters: I will be making 3D models of Fencing (all types mostly to resemble fencing on Lionel and MTH accessories for use with extension pieces); Lighted assemblies like traffic signals. street lights, building lights ( all styles that I can think of to replace the non-working building lights on the Woodland Scenics buildings with hollowed out portions for wires and small LEDs; building structure parts; castigated trusses, non-Plastruct made beams, column base-plates, rolling doors, hollow piping for wires to upper level switch machines; Gears that are hard to find. WHEW!

My ambitious plans, if successful, would provide copies of .stl, .obj.  and .form with pictures on the Forum for anyone to use gratis that can be used with any other 3D printer; as I intend on forgoing all copyrights to the designs.

If anyone else has 3D files that they would like to share,  post them.

I am almost ready to buy a friends used 3-D printer. He has upgraded to a bigger one. He suggested SketchUp Maker (which he said is free) to use for creating my designs.

I would like to try my hand at using the S/W first, before buying. If it is reasonable to use, I will buy and design and will also make the .stl and .skp files available to all.

I think having a set of boxcar doors in different sizes and manufacturers would be a nice thing to have.  Cars had 6', 7', 8' doors as well as 6-panel and 7-panel Superior doors, Youngstown doors, etc.  Other than Atlas most mass-produced cars like the PS1 always come with the same type doors, when a lot of RRs choose which doors they wanted to use.  I think the PS1 cars could be purchased in kit form from Pullman and the RR put them together with whatever doors, brakes, roofwalks, trucks, etc they wanted at the time.

And a model of a Dalman truck would be a nice thing to have also:

Alan,

Making you designs available for free is such a nice gesture !

I was hoping that one day we would see forum members posting about their 3D creations.  I am really excited to see your results.

I was wondering about the various design software programs.   The last time I looked (4 years ago) into 3D printing the software to design an object was daunting to the beginner or non-tech folks.

Has there been any new software programs come out that make the design task any easier or more user friendly.

Thanks,

Ed
