My first model train ever. I have attached two pdf files: one for my proposed layout and another for the proposed power train (from Power Supplies to a TIU and then two Terminal Blocks).
I need help understanding the logic of creating track power sections: where to place insulated joints and power drops, especially around and through areas containing turn-outs and switches. In other respects, I believe my plans are in keeping with Barry’s do/don’t lists on pages 57 & 158 of his 3rd edition manual.
- Limit number of track blocks per TIU channel to less than 15 (connected to one Terminal Block per TIU fixed Channel)
- Limit track blocks to less than 12 track sections which are in aggregate less than 100ft (my longest section is 22ft)
- Use 16 Gauge paired wire from TIU to tracks. I plan to use 12 gauge twisted pair from power supply to TIU and 12 Gauge twisted pair from TIU to Terminal Blocks, then 14 gauge twisted pair from Terminal Blocks to track power drops with 18-gauge solid paired wire for the last 1-2 feet for soldering to track.
- I am trying to plan a home-run or star-plan wiring scheme
- I plan to solder large sections of track to assure there is continuous connection
I think I have accounted for the above criteria in my proposed layout in the Red, Yellow and Green track sections. However, I am at a loss as to how to partition the Grey, Purple and Blue sections regarding insulated gap and power drop locations. The Purple and Grey sections would ideally have portions to allow some track sections to be operated in a power off/on status.
PS. I cannot seem to upload/paste a clear jpg. If anyone wants to see this in a legible scale let me know and I can forward.
