My O22 switches operate from fixed 16V.  Most are bayonet style 1445, but several are 1447 screw base bulbs.  I have found adequately bright 1445 style LED bulbs that broadcast light in a horizontal 270 degree flood light style, and operate at 16V max, and they’re great.

I recently found 1447 LED bulbs with the same flood pattern, but they’re only offered in 12 or 24 volts.  My question is....        Will LED bulbs be dimmer when used at a lower than prescribed voltage, the same way an incandescent bulb would be?  I’ve noticed that 18V LEDs show only a negligible difference in brightness when powered by either 11 or 16 volts.  I’m curious if 24V bulbs powered by 16V would even be much dimmer, or noticeable, or if I should buy 12 volt version.   They’re cheap enough that premature failure (several months of life) isn’t too much of a concern.

 Thanks all.

Tom

PWM is a widely used dimming method, I use PWM in my Super-Chuffer to dim the headlight and also to run the smoke motor.

There is no degradation for using PWM as long as the average and peak currents stay within the LED ratings.  Little known is a 20ma rated LED can withstand a lot more current in a brief pulse as long as the average current doesn't exceed 20ma over the time period.  There are also maximum pulse current ratings, usually two to four times the average current rating.

Here's a typical Lite-On white LED max ratings.

Thank you. I might try one of these dimmers to reduce my LED brightness on my rope lights. I'll see if I can find those ratings.
