I recently purchased the upgraded roundhouse windows from Korber.  They are absolutely great and a snap to install.  It gives the building a whole new look.  However it presents a different problem.  You know the old adage that you can't just paint 1 room, as it makes all the other rooms look drab.  The new windows looked so good it made the rest of the unit like it also needed an upgrade (This had been my first attempt at assembling and painting a structure).  So I ended up repainting the unit, upgrading the roof to have what is supposed to look like stone or gravel roofing.

One of the things I was never happy with was my attempt at illuminating the structure.  I put in 3 strings each with 3 LEDs.  This turned put to be woefully inadequate.

I was wondering if anyone has tried using strips of the roll LEDs that has been talked about on the forum.  I was thinking about running one strip the entire length of each of the main beams.  I don't know if that would be too much or not enough LEDs to light it up pretty well.

Thanks,

Ed

Thank you Ed,

I really do like the new windows, when I get time , I need to upgrade my roundhouse. (I built one for the show with them, but on my layout is the older one)

Dave Super Job!

You can find a free download of our new instructions for this model on this page of our web site.

In the instructions, we were lucky to have input from several great modelers, including  Mike Thompson (Mike CT), Alex Muller, and Bob Bartizek.  Bob provided a great section on adding LED lights to the roundhouse, including full color photos.  It really is sharp.

You may find this useful.

Thanks Railroad-guy

Glad you like the instructions.  I thin good instructions really make building the kits much simpler.

Yes the windows fit the older models, no change in the window openings.  In fact the window work on the 304 RH(larger), the 320 RH(smaller), 307 trolley barn, and the 302 engine house.

Yes we do have new doors,

The detail items for O scale are on this page

Door photo is turned sideways so it may look off at first.

Hi Ed

Light intensity is subjective. The big knock on early LEDs was that they were too dim, were directional and had an unpleasant bluish cast. As long as you get the warm white with a wide view angle, you will have none of these problems. The strips are plenty bright IMO run on 12 VDC. However there are brighter individual ones that I cited. I use the 100 ma directional 5 chip types in spot lights and such. Just watch your resistor wattage.   I am a toy train guy so l tend to light things like passenger cars brightly. If the strips are too bright you could break them off in series of 3 and wire the strips in series,+ to -  or add an additional resistor ,or simply reduce input voltage.

John on the electrical forum uses a voltage regulator, wired as a current limiter. See the post there on LED strips do not work.

So I would just run the strips solid, as long as the building, apply 12VDC (Use a suitable bridge rectifier from an AC transformer) and if they are too bright simply dim them down. Easiest way is to reduce input voltage which could be done inserting a few diodes as voltage droppers in series or simply using a lower transformer tap.  That way you will get even light distribution in a long structure. Wiring this way is very easy.  There are a lot of ways to do things and it is personal preference. I have also used some amber LEDs which have a nice effect.
