Look at the strip.  You'll see the strip is divided into segments with a copper pad and scissor symbol defining a segment.  Cut across the pad to create a smaller segment and solder the lead wires to the pads.  Each of the segments takes 12vDC.  Only the amps change with increasing number of contiguous segments.  Obey polarity when connecting.

Most LED reels have a round power connector at the outside end of the reel with wire leads soldered to the first pad on the strip.  Use that as an example for power connection.  You can buy additional power connectors.  Some have mechanical attachment, but I prefer to solder wire leads.

I wouldn't recommend a "soldering gun" for LED light strips, too much current, too much heat.   I finally broke down and bought a variable wattage soldering station about 3 years ago.   Should have done that 15 years ago.  Here's some photos of a kitbash building I am working on presently with LED light strips.  The Green and White wires coming up from the foundation are the variable DC power leads for the strips.  The 2 conductor plug between sections of the building is there so I can separate the two halves as the overall LCL warehouse is over 32 inches long.

Personally, I purchased some small variable DC Buck converters so I could adjust the brightness of LED's.  If you have a small DC power supply even wall wart, then the DC in DC out variable buck converters are considerably less expensive than AC / DC Buck converters.   They are readily available on the Bay.

You will most likely prefer the "Warm White" LED strips the light is much more natural than Bright White which tends to get hot and in the blue spectrum.

Here is what I use for 12VDC LED strip lighting:

LED strip (Reel): https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(Suitcase) Connectors: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hookup Wire: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

You can cut the LED strip every 3 LED's. Cut to length in slip the correct end into the suitcase connector and snap the top shut. Polarity counts!

That should get you started. Email me if you have any questions.
