I think for the most part, that's making mountains out of anthills.  Yes, you can damage an LED by a huge power spike, or more quickly with a reverse voltage spike.  If you recall, I consistently recommend a diode to protect against reverse voltage, the chief enemy of most LEDs.  A short term spike in the forward directly will only damage the LED if it's pretty significant in amplitude and current capability.
