Was/is the sound volume "low" on these engines?

I removed the coal pile, and increased the volume to Max, and the whistle/bell, and chuffing sounds seem low/weak to me.

Is this just one of the glitches with these engines, or is there something I can do, to increase the volume, so it can be heard above the noise of a couple of cars the engine pulls?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!.................................Brandy!

The speaker is a 40mm baby fatboy. These are not as loud as the 50mm version but probably used due to lack of room. The main reason for the low sound is use of the "Railsounds Lite" board. The few engines I have with this board also lack volume. The problem is trying to get a full blown Legacy Railsounds board from Lionel. You could call and ask if you could swap yours out but not sure what their response would be.

Mine isn't the loudest locomotive I have, but it's not that bad.  I have the 6-11297 P. Bunyan #18, I believe identical to most of the others.  I don't know if there's room for one of the little amplifiers you can find on eBay, they're about 1/4" thick and less than 1" square.  You need a source of 5VDC power as well, but that would certainly boost the audio drive.  I don't see changing the speaker without a lot of surgery, and the 40mm fatboy can be pretty loud if driven by the right audio source.
