Ok, so I took the day off and ran some trains. Don't have a lay out any more and it takes some effort to get going. I have 6 new Lionel engines that I had bought over the last 7 or 8 months and they had not been run, so I thought I better check them out before the warranties expire. Overall had a fun day with some fast track.

First two engines I ran and loaded into the Legacy controller were UP ES44's #7454 & #7459 - every thing worked perfect.

Third engine was the BNSF #6431 - all works great but can't get the Ground lights to work ( I know there is a buttom for this on the hand held) but it does not make them work. Any suggestions here?

Fourth engine was the KCS #4655 - Engine works fine. The problem is when you try to load the orange memory module is can't find it or read it. You can just manually input the information, but I think I am missing somthing. I know on the hand held that the groundlight buttons do not show up under this engine and some other items. Not sure what all the orange memory module does? All the specific engine announcements seem to be there "Saying 4655, KCS, etc." Do I have to get a new module from Lionel or can I load say the UP version and just rename it under this engine number and get all the extra features.....or will it now say UP 7454, your clear for departure?

Fifth engine was the MoPac S-2 switcher #9108 -Again everything is great except that the couplers do not open. They make the sound and buzz like they should but will not open. Lionel told me today that 95% just need some poedered graphite in the nuckle and that would fix it. Well I tried that and nothing. To me it seems some lubricant would work better if that is the issue but have not tried this yet. Any body have any sugestions or am I wasting my time here?

Finally the last engines were an A-A set of Southern Pacific Alco Pa's - Here everything was perfect no issues at all. I noticed that they did make the distance between units closer than my old Santa fe #51's thats atleast an improvement. Not as good as say an Atlas unit would be but much better than before.

If any one can help me on the question I have above I would be grateful.

Thanks Joe

Joe,

For the BNSF engine try reloading the memory module and doing an engine reset. If both fail open up shell and see if wires are connected to ground lights. If all else fails contact Lionel.

For the KCS engine try loading the module again and read the first couple pages of manual which describe how to set engine number etc. If that does not work contact Lionel tell your problem and they will most likely send you a new module. An engines sounds are not received by the module. An engines sounds are specific to each unit. All the module does it give you the legacy controls and is a faster way of uploading information.

Lastly for the MoPac engine I would try lubricating them. Never heard of using powdered graphite on the coupler. The couplers are electro-magnetic so it is probably something electronic that is not working right. Again if all else fails contact Lionel.

Hope this helps. I find that letting Lionel's service team in OH take care of the issue is much better than trying to fix it yourself. The electronics in Legacy engines are extremely complicated and packed tight.

Powdered graphite is a dry lubricant.

Legacy diesels aren't all that bad when it comes to taking the shell off.  The wiring for the most part is neatly tied up.  You still have to be careful, but it's not scary.  I've had the shell off my Legacy SD80's a number of times for various reasons and I haven't had any issues yet.  My TMCC GP9 is a different story

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses.

First: Audi had the correct answer for the S-2. I tried everthing but was sitting at 16 to 17 volts. Amazing what 18 volts get you. So the Mopac is working great now.

Second: I loaded the BNSF ES44 memory module to the engine numbered assigned to the KCS Es44 and renamed the engine and number back to the KCS engine manually. Now all works perfect there.

Third: The BNSF ES 44 ground lights. I had already tried resetting and reloading the modules - may try it again. I am thinkibg they are not pluged in. Thinking about opening it up. What screws do I use - I am guessing the 8 larger ones (not the 4 on the tanks)

Thanks again

Joe

Ok all engines work now - Thanks for all the advice.

I took the shell off the BNSF unit this morning and looked at the connections. The ground lites looked plugged in correctly, but I unpluged them and re-plugged them in anyway will I was there. I found a wire that had been crushed between the frame and shell close to the back and I put some electrical tape on it and re routed it. There are two wire nuts connecting all the wires together close to the back motor. They both fell right off. One I was able to rework, the other one was simply to small. I luckily had a wire nut just slightly larger and this was able to hold all the wires. Put it back together and everthing works great.

I think the exposeed wire was part of my back up light problem. It worked sometines and not others. The back up light and ground lights could have been caused by the loose wire nuts.

Heads up there - this might be the fix on other engines.

Thanks

Joe
