I purchased Legacy system a month ago. I just got some trains running so I figured I will upgrade to the new version. I checked my version and found it is 1.0, checked Lionel site for upgrade instructions and found that if my system does not have a silver dot on base or handheld unit I have to return it to Lionel for the upgrade. Mine does not have the silver dot! Lionel says it can take up to 14 days after they receive the unit. My concern?  I just spent $350. a month ago, received a old unit? Now I have to wait 14 days? I feel very ripped right now. My question is has anyone else incounter this? Is there a way to upgrade without returning it to Lionel?

Thanks for the response Gunrunner. I purchased it from Nicholas Smith Trains (nicholassmith.com ) Purchased new less then a month ago. I just wrote them an e-mail about returning for a newer model with silver dot or refund my purchase price.

Nicholas Smith trains has been in business for many years. They have always been very helpful and have good pricing. My dad bought American Flyer from them when they were located in center city Philadelphia.

They appear to have many customers, therefore I cannot figure how they have old stock of Legacy. Since I am new to Lionel I would like to know approx how old this system is?

The silver dot only applied to 1.0 units that were repaired before going on sale. No other units shipped (1.2 and above) will have a silver dot. If you have a 1.0 base it MUST go to Lionel do be serviced, once returned you will be able to do any other upgrades yourself

I'd like to know where they had that one hidden, I would actually ship it back to Nicolas Smith and get a new one. The older 1.0 bases also had battery charger issues and you will probably be returning it more than once unless Lionel fixes the battery charger while they are at it. The 1.0 unit is at least 4 years old

He can't do the upgrade on a 1.0 unit that has not been back to Lionel for factory updates.

Thanks everyone for your response. I just received answer to my e-mail I sent to Nicholas Smith. They apoligized for my receiving an old unit and said they are down to the last two and they also are the old units. They told me to return it to them which I plan on doing Saturday morning. Now back to shopping for another unit.
