While my H10 has been solid, from a performance standpoint, I would like to alter the smokebox and tender deck to the more traditional style of previous PRR Legacy steam releases.

Anyone know what the best paint brand/color of paint would be to match the roof of the loco cab?

And what the best brand/color of paint to mimic the dark graphite of previous PRR steam?

Thanks,

Mike

For what it's worth, remember that the PRR stopped painting steam locomotive cab roofs red, after WWII.

As I posted elsewhere (and quite a while ago) I like this stuff:

I used this on a Flyer #312; as you can see, it's a very close match to the color of the Korean-built TMCC H9:

One of the things that surprises me the most that in spite of all the issues, wrong color on smoke box, wiring exposed in tender, Electrocouplers shorting out and on and on. Everyone seems to love these engines.

I guess the more they screw up the more people like the big L. Is it the price. If these engines were MSRP $1099.00 what would be the responses.

I remember the Lionel CV Steamer. The color was trashed and the value of the engine dropped. Nobody wanted it. Maybe the diehards are willing to accept the issues and keep buying.

I’m getting the H10 set and I hear that although the engine is OK that some of the rolling stock has some issues. I had planned to keep it unopened but now I need to check it out when I get it.

What issues with the rolling stock? This is the first time I herd of issues associated with this set.

Handrails on the boxcar and something about the side frames on the hoppers. I need to clarify the issues With my friend who got his set, he is a SS, so could make the repairs. I understand they are minor but still an annoyance.

I’m going to take the H10 set because my friend reserved it on my behalf. I just hope I can get most of my money back but that may doubtful. I’ll be lucky to get half of what I paid. I would be better off just throwing the money down the toilet.

Starting next week I’m taking down my layout. I’m done with this hobby.

I queried the forum relative to problems being more predominant with one tender type over the other. The response was small but I could not establish any trend relating to one version or the other. Across many topics relating to the H10 the owners seemed pleased with the performance regardless of the tender type. "Would-be owners" appear to easily swayed based more on their pre-disposed feelings or financial comfort levels......and that's OK as well........

Well I’m picking up the set sometime this week. I had some additional discussion and found out a couple of things. When my friend opened the set he has he found hand rails on the box car not installed and some of the hand rails on the coal hoppers bent. He also found additional orange hand rails in the bottom of the set box but has no idea where they are from.

The IR bar on the tender needed to be bent to prevent the screw holding it from damaging the two wires. In addition the wires for the track sensor were too tight preventing the truck from moving properly. He was able to pull the wires and give it more clearance.

I had planned to not open the set in anticipation of selling it but now I’m going to open it up and he will help me make the necessary repairs. He is a SS so we should be able to make all the corrections. My plan is to at least get rid of the cars.

I have no idea what I am going to find once we open the box.

My guess is these Chinese workers must be paid on a piece rate so the more product they assemble the more money they make. Or they are so cheaply paid that they just don’t care. Hide the problem.

I did not order the H10 because of the 1100.00 MSRP and the 700.00 + street price was a bit high for such a small engine. Now  with the problems everyone seems to be having in hindsight I was glad I did not pull the trigger on it.

The staff should be thanked for letting folks vent on this.

The set had a list price of $1099.99 but the engines had a list price of $799.99. The original preorder price on the engines was a low of $599 from Nassau and a high of $625 from the other dealers. I never did see what the preorder price was for the set but at $700 that would have been a bargain.

Just getting back to this thread now.

Mark in Oregon - That's almost true! Still a lot of good responses here from the group, as always.

Hot Water - Thanks for the heads-up. We're going with a Pre-war theme for the scale layout so I guess the roof color will still be in play.

Just to reiterate, I pre-ordered the Penn. Lines model with the high tender at the low (relative) price mentioned above. Other than the paint, the model has been what I expected. Smooth Legacy speed control, great sound and all of the additional features that were advertised. We had no issues with tender or coupler wiring. Everything was clean and neat.

Is it perfect - No, but I knew that before ordering. I knew that they were reusing tooling from 2000 that didn't compare to the MTH consolidation of that time. The MTH H10 is a much better model with a lot more detail and almost convinced me, about ten years ago, to make a wholesale change to MTH/DCS.

However, I run only Legacy and already have the Legacy PRR Atlantic and b6  (I like small, PRR steam). I'm not about to buy another control system just for one loco and buying, gutting and installing an ERR board in the MTH unit won't get me Legacy speed control or sound. Thus, I will fix the silver paint, add some detailing to the Lionel model and eventually weather all three locos.

Thanks again to all who responded and have a great New Year!
