I have a Lionel LEGACY Light Mikado from the most recent 2020 run - item no. 2131330. It performs well, but just recently the sounds do not want to respond all the time.

What I mean by that is the sound commands from the LEGACY remote won't work. The locomotive itself will react to the commands as should - for example, the whistle steam will activate when I blow the whistle on the LEGACY remote, but the whistle sound in the tender won't sound.

Sometimes it'll drop in and out, too. Where the chugging will stop and start when the locomotive is moving. I'll hear the neutral steam sounds instead of the chugging when it stops. It's not the sounds dropping out entirely like you'd typically hear when a locomotive runs over a dead spot. The neutral steam sounds and familiar metal creaking sounds are still playing.

Is this a problem with the tender's sound board? Or a problem with the IR tether?

Some rules I offer:

MTH tenders- because of electrical connection- do not swap tenders for testing is the general advice. Yes, if you 100% know the systems are compatible wiring and pinout- OK, but to the general public- just don't do it.

Lionel tenders- because they are IR for most modern ones- they either work or don't due to signal compatibility (or over or under IR mounting as a physical problem)- but no chance of damage from trying. It simply sees the IR signal and understands the data or doesn't, and boots the sound in conventional mode.
