O.K. Here's my sad story.
Bought a used 6-34624 Texas Special SD70ACe on Ebay at a great price last year. Saved lots of $$$.
Then, about 3 months later the sound completely quits. Reset does nothing. Nothing in the troubleshooting tips in the manual help.Sound is out. Period. All other functions...lights, motors, direction all still worked.
I'm not the guy to go poking around in expensive electronic components.
Took engine to a LHS for authorized repair. Owner puts it on his track and all works well...SOUND IS BACK WORKING. Go figure.
LHS owner recommends leave it at LHS to see if trouble returns.
1 Week later I pick it up (as I am told trouble has not returned), pay $60.00 to LHS and take engine home.
One day later sound quits AGAIN.
Return to LHS for another go around. Same thing...wait a week...told all works well...verify at store...pay $60.00...take home.
One day later...sound quits again.
Now I'm out $120.00.
So I call a friend who isn't a Lionel repair tech but he really knows train repair.
Net result...The engine needs a new Legacy Railsounds board and some other board that works with it.
$200.00 tab.
That ebay savings has flown the coop by now. I'm out more than an original engine at RETAIL price.
Lesson learned...you pays your money and you takes your chances.
Long story approaching an end.
Have now operated the engine for 6 months without any trouble whatsoever.
Until today.
When I pressed the horn button on the cab-1 the sound was very faint.
After getting my stomach to quit making flip-flops I kept pressing the horn button and the sounds gradually returned to full volume.
I had not manually lowered the volume in any way. It just did it by itself. And returned to full volume by itself.
Tell me I'm not heading back to the poor house. Please.
Any ideas?
