Got to run a brand new legacy engine. Runs fine but chuff randomly goes out and tender back up light will not work. Then it will work fine. We swapped tenders and issue follows tender. Tried Eng Eng# Set Eng Eng# Aux1 1 program reset with Cab-1. Issue remains.

Any ideas? He's not thrilled a new piece is defective out of the box, it has run 80 feet total and he would like to avoid returning the brand new product if possible.

Does it always occur in the same spot or random places on the layout? It sounds like its in the tender, but to verify this he can put the tender on the layout by itself.

It will produce idle steam sounds the instant it is powered up. Then he can push it around and try to "narrow down" what is causing it.

At this point it sounds like its losing power, Id start going for the easy stuff, check that the rollers aren't loose or misaligned.

Make sure the track is clean, even though it looks clean it can still be dirty enough to cause problems.

The latest legacy locos are especially sensative to dirty track. any time I've had a loco acting strange and thought it was something more serious it always ended up being the track.

If none of that helps, from there you are probably looking at opening the tender and checking wire connections inside.

It sucks, many of us have been there, but unfortunately, the only way to make Lionel accountable for defective products is to send it to them and have them fix it.

The constantly evolving electronics in these trains are never perfected.

FREDSTRAINS

Opening the tender will not void warranty if it has a backup battery option. There are specific instructions in the manual on opening the tender to install one.

Having said that, even if this wasn't the case as long as you don't strip out the screws and tear out all of the wiring once your in there. They really have no way of knowing.

It would occur anywhere, even with the engine sitting still, there would be the "idle" sounds as soon as it was powered up but no other sounds such as chuff or whistle 3/4 of the time. If moving on even straight track the sounds would disappear and come back on. A friend brought over the exact same engine and it was fine. Switched tenders and the issues followed the tender. Sadly we sent it back. Thanks for the help.

Our understanding is the store could not repair it, a board issue and the IR sensor problems, all in the tender, so they returned it to Lionel as defective.

They have purchased 5 Legacy units, 3 had issues right out of the box. This unit with Legacy problems, a pair of PA's that had issues and pieces rattleing around inside and a bad 990 set. They have a GS-2 where Lionel faced the Daylight logo the wrong way (how?) and a Cab-2 "light" set. Back at the local store this weekend and a new K-4 had issues right out of the box on test track for the customer so they swapped it for a new one and the store is returning returning the bad one to Lionel. (for credit I'd guess.)
