The Legacy Users Group Breakfast.

Special thanks to Dave Slie for videoing the event.

Please note some of my commentary is based on observations at the Lionel Booth and may not reflect the actual product or how it operates.  All opinions are mine and do not necessarily reflect Lionel's views. I will post the Q&A tomorrow.  First day back at work was a bear.  Keep in mind that I am not a professional speaker so it is, what it is...  We tried to relay and answer the question the best we could based on the questions asked.  Answers via paper at the bottom.

Had Rich re-open this thread!  Thanks Rich!

Questions from the other thread...

Please note a few of these are about production and are best asked at the Lionel booth.  I will submit them but I will betcha they come back with the "Ask the production folks" answer.

  • question, what will happen when a Thomas remote or a Lionchief remote die and we can no longer run our trains?

could Lionel make an interface so the above remote trains be run with the legacy or cab1L?

  • Will we have the ability to operate and enhance thru Legacy the starter set engines and someone else asked what the purpose of the 10 pin connector on the ZW-L will be for eg. upgrades or......
  • I hope you cover some of the special features of the ZW-L.

I look forward to joining you at the meeting.

  • Are there any plans to enhance the LSU program to include tabs for Train/Track, Accessories, Routes and Switches?
  • Is it possible to add an icon the will turn the smoke unit off and on and not mess with the output.  In other words one like is on the DCS handheld for when you when the smoke off but do not want to go into a menu to select it on or off etc.
  • Mode support on the CAB-1L.  It has to do Legacy and it has to do CAB-1 to control the PowerMasters.  Will it also send true TMCC commands or will TMCC loco's be running in dumbed down CAB-1 mode?
  • TPC's are now considered old/obsolete?  Does Lionel have any plans for a higher output device to replace the TPC for trains that just consume more than 10 amps or provide macro support for PS-1 and PS2/3 engines the way the TPC can?
  • Do they have any plans to add more tmcc fasttrack switches to the line? such as a #6 or#100 radius switch or some curved switches to provide greater flexibility in layout building. When will the IR track be available for sale or has it been cancelled?
  • Any new updates on the IPad software that debuted last October and if that will go public.
  • Who decides what starter sets get the new remote control system. Why not add this to some of the better sets such as the pennsy old time steam passenger set and the bnsf container train set. Why not the overland flyer set for that matter! The 2-4-2 loco's are bull it proof, but they have been run to death and look silly next to there other starter loco's IMHO! Why no liomaster diesil type engines with the new rremote system to better compete with the competitors starter set engines? Can they also quit using all plastic truck and couplers on there starter sets also? I can't think of anyone else who uses those all plastic trucks like that any more. These two improvements mentioned would make there starter sets more appealing and worth buying over the competition's starter sets IMHO!
  • Why not equip the starter sets with TMCC and have a low-cost TMCC system?  Going with a dead-end RF system seems to be the wrong way to go.  MTH certainly is doing a better job with the RTR sets.
  • How do you set a Lionchief remote to control a particular engine when 2 or more are run simultaneously?

  • How many watts does the Lionchief transformer produce?

  • Will the iPad application Interface with ASCs, SC-2s and BPCs?

  • If the IR track will be marketed will there be a stand alone IR trans/receiver for non-Fasttrack users?

  • Why not make all locos TMCC/Legacy upgradeable with a standard plug in board?

i.e. a standard conventional reverse board that can be upgraded to TMCC or Legacy by simply unplugging and plugging in the new command board.

  • What is the status of the super streets replacement? Has it been cancelled or just shelved for a while?
  • A question about the ZW-L,Pg 21 0f OGRR run #263, talks about an internal

antenna for the receiver. This suggests that the ZW-L can be controled

by the Cab 2 without a command base. The Video by Mike R has the same statement.

    What is correct ?

Catalogs is a good idea and worth doing, but could be out of date shortly after publication, how about an email  or a postcard to all registered users when updates area available? (In addition to the catalog)

Marty,

One more idea/question...

Would it be possible for the cab light on/off button to be programmed as the master switch for cab lighting?  It would work like this....with the cab light button in the off position, the light would stay off at all times, even if the engine is brought to a stop.

Currently, when switching or doing a lot of stops and quick direction changes the cab light goes off and on and it is annoying.  But a master switch/button would remedy that.  It could still be used to turn the light on and off as it does currently, and when turned on the light behaves as it currently does, but with it off it would stay off until the command was given to turn back on.  Know what I mean?

Marty,

Will the current Legacy Sound System architecture allow for a file to be uploaded to the memory of the engine?  If not, can this feature be possible?  If so, I would envision each Legacy engine to come with a unique and hopefully accurate set of files for engine sounds only, the base sound set package.  Then, if customers wanted engine specific crew talk, or to change the whistle or add sounds that may not have been available at the time of the engine's initial release (eg. filling of tender with coal) then they could upgrade their engine's file set by purchasing the file from Lionel's web page, download it and install on their engine.

The customer gets the sounds they want, people can stop whining about crew talk on engines that pre-dated radio communication and/or crew talk that is not specific to their engine, (or in my case I can stop whining about that annoying east coast accented engineer in the cab of all of western roads' locomotives ) and Lionel would have a fee based service that would not inflate the base price of the engine.

Of course I am guessing that this is not feasible, because if it were, then they would already offer this feature.  But, what do I know.

thanks

Since I just purchased my first Legacy diesel (Amtrak Dash 9) at the Red Carpet Sale and a Legacy 990 yesterday at my LHS I would like to join you guys for breakfast and learn a bit more about this new "world of Lionel Legacy".    Up until now (into the hobby for all of 15 months) all I know (and very little at that) is MTH DCS.  But Mike Reagan told me to go "full bore" and buy the Legacy controller instead of running thru DCS - and we all listen to Big Mike!  So far I'm not regretting it.

Hi Marty,

I keep posting ideas here to discuss at the upcoming LUG meeting, I think this is the spot, if not point me in the right direction.  One of the bullets in your post mentioned upgrading the LSU program in order to have access to switches and accessories.  That is a great idea!  Another feature that would enhance the functionality of the LSU is a NOTE section.  It would be cool to be able to type notes into the LSU that could be displayed on the CAB2 screen.  The user could scroll the list of notes with the CAB2 softkeys for reminders such as a list of engine numbers, which keys to reset the sound system after a drop out (Aux something...I never remember) or whatever.    Anyway just a thought.  Maybe this is something that iPad will allow in the future...time will tell.

thanks again

Marty,

Please count me in for 1.  (I responded to the original thread way back when, but it just occurred to me you might not have been able to capture the responses before it accidentally got locked).

Hoping to pick up LUG shirt at the breakfast(but can meet you pretty much whenever else is good if that's too hectic).

Thanks!
